Toyota Literacy Program
As the largest minority population in the U.S. with the highest school dropout rate and decreasing adult literacy levels, Hispanic families have urgent educational needs. Toyota and the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) established the Toyota Family Literacy Program (TFLP) in 2003 to improve the language and literacy skills of Hispanic and other immigrant families. Each of the 10 current Toyota communities offers educational programming to families at three elementary schools. In the fall of 2006, the TFLP will expand to five additional communities, bringing the total number of school sites to 45. Since 1991, Toyota has helped NCFL develop family literacy services that have touched the lives of more than one million families. Toyota and NCFL firmly believe that building on the strong culture of family will go a long way toward narrowing the academic achievement gap for English language learners. - Sharon Darling, President and Founder, NCFL |
